Homework: Final Scene Summary – Act 5, Scene 3

In the final scene of Romeo and Juliet, the prophesy as expressed in the prologue comes to fruition – yet the drama of the play is never higher. In your scene summary, try to indicate how Shakespeare has managed the events of the scene to create this dramatic tension. This is particularly interesting in the light of the fact that everything happened as predicted.

The two quotations that might help you in this are to follow:

Romeo, on his death:

Come, bitter conduct, come, unsavoury guide!
Thou desperate pilot, now at once run on
The dashing rocks thy sea-sick weary bark!
Here’s to my love!

Friar Lawrence, after discovering Romeo dead:

A greater power than we can contradict
Hath thwarted our intents. Come, come away.

Author: Christopher Waugh

“Risk! Risk anything! Care no more for the opinions of others, for those voices. Do the hardest thing on earth for you. Act for yourself. Face the truth.” (Katherine Mansfield)
